North Carolina based filmmaker, Kenneth Price documented a year in the life of Grammy Award winning producer 9th Wonder in “The Wonder Year”. I had the privilege of attending the press screening at the Red Bull Space in NYC on Tuesday night, and highly recommend this documentary. In 78 minutes, Price captures the brilliance and humility of the CEO, NAACP ambassador, Duke University professor, husband, father and son that the music world knows as 9th Wonder. When the PR manager for the film first told me about it, I have to admit that, although I have always been intrigued by Wonder as a producer (mostly for his former involvement with group Little Brother), I had no idea what to expect. I am now in awe of how he taught himself to play 7 instruments at a young age, his dedication and commitment to bringing young disenfranchised youth to college and to financial independence, his incredible musical knowledge and diverse historical reach related to the ethnomusicology of hip hop, and his genius in making a record that is unknown to him into a masterpiece in less than 10 minutes. Check out the trailer below, and if you’re in New York, check out the screening on July 28th.
