Since September 20th, community, art lovers, families, cultural anthropologists, press, etc. have participated in touring the walking exhibition that ranges from Leigh’s clinic to Otabenga Jones & Associate’s radio station broadcasting from the back of a classic pink Cadillac. This project was curated by Rashida Bumbray and recently featured on the cover of the New York Times Arts section, where writer Holland Cotter reflects on his experience while visiting. In the article Cotter takes note of the design aesthetic that we cultivated for the style of dress for Leigh’s vision of her clinic:

For the project, Ms. Leigh has turned it into a walk-in health center, modeled on those opened by the Black Panthers in the 1960s, but with a 19th-century overlay: Its staff is dressed in a style of uniforms worn by a society of black nurses called the United Order of Tents, which was founded in the mid-19th century, did valiant work during the Civil War, and still has headquarters in the neighborhood.

Leigh’s dedication to paying homage to these nurses throughout the process of envisioning her clinic was so evident from our first meeting about wardrobe. It’s nice to see recognition of her passion for authenticating this beauty, while provoking thought around this history. Every weekend Leigh’s clinic has hosted an array of free services and classes focused on health and wellness. During this final weekend, FPMC has a schedule of classes and events ranging from “Earth, Wind & Fire” yoga classes to HIV Screenings. funkgodjazz&medicine: Black Radical Brooklyn

Opening Party: September 20th 2-6pm

Weeksville Heritage Center: 158 Buffalo Avenue & Bergen Street. Brooklyn, NY

September 20 – October 12, 2014. Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays 12-6pm

escape artist had the pleasure of collaborating and designing costumes for artist Simone Leigh’s “Free Peoples Medical Clinic” (FPMC), which is one of four projects in Creative Time and Weeksville Heritage Center‘s Funk, God, Jazz, and Medicine: Black Radical Brooklyn. This is a walkable month-long art exhibition of community-based art commissions curated by Rashida Bumbray, and also including artists Xenobia Bailey, Otabenga Jones & Associates, and Bradford Young. Black Radical Brooklyn launches from the site of Weeksville, a Brooklyn community established by free and formerly enslaved Black citizens 11 years after abolition in New York State. Simone Leigh‘s project focuses on engaging the critical intersections of public health, racial consciousness, and women’s work as it asks viewers to consider the often-overlooked players – most especially the unknown Black women nurses, osteopaths, gynecologists, and midwives – who have overserved an underserved population for centuries.
