Best of 2011: OUTERWEAR

For best outerwear of 2011, we cheated. The truth is that Marni has been a long-standing favorite who can do no wrong in our hearts, so it goes without saying that the work of designer Consuelo Castiglioni came to mind for this years favorite jacket. The relaxed, boxy, three-quarter sleeve outerwear silhouette has crept up in many collections, but our coveted Italian brain-trust was the first to debut it in such a charming color and pattern story on the runway. There may be some bias here, but clearly global retail giant H&M agrees that classic Marni prints like this “fusing forms” vignette will translate from runway to retail, based on their decision to choose Castiglioni for this Spring’s collaboration. As Tim Blanks of says in the above video, “she aims for a sort of sensuality of the mind”. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for that sort of intellectual passion in fashion…and at an affordable price? Now, that’s smart.
